When
presenting salvation, the New Testament writers carefully chose words that
emphasize grace and freedom. As a result, the Bible could not be more
clear—salvation is absolutely free, the true gift of God in Christ, and our
only responsibility is to receive the gift by faith.
Romans 6:23 For the
wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal
life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ephesians 2:8&9 “For it is by grace you
have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift
of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
John 3:4-6 Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of
God unless they are born again. 5Jesus
answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom
of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of
the Spirit. 7Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You must be
born again.’
Jesus made it clear: the path to eternal life is open to
everyone who asks. However, the gate to heaven is “narrow” in the sense
of having a particular requirement for entrance—faith in Jesus Christ alone.
Salvation is found only in the Person of Jesus Christ; He is the only way. On
the other hand, the “wide” gate is non-exclusive; it allows for human effort
and all other of the world’s religions. Jesus the Savior who offers the only means
of going to heaven, the narrow gate.
Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else,
for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved”
John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the
life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Vines Expository Dictionary’s
definition of believe: to “Believe,"
also "to be persuaded of," and hence, "to place confidence in,
to trust," signifies, in this sense of the word, reliance upon,
not mere credence. Don’t forget, satan believes in Jesus with his mind, but he
hasn’t placed his confidence in Jesus, hasn’t relied on
Jesus for the gift of Salvation.
The thief on the cross next to Jesus listened to Him,
listened and learned about Salvation. He accepted Jesus Christ’s
free gift. This is the most beautiful example of the fact that your good
works can’t get you into Heaven. There would be no good works for
the thief, he couldn’t even kneel down, he was nailed to a
cross. His faith alone would take him to Heaven along with Jesus.
